West Midlands RAS Cluster launches new online hub to support robotics and autonomous systems collaboration

The West Midlands RAS (Robotics and Autonomous Systems) Cluster, a joint initiative founded by the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the University of Birmingham, has launched its new website. The announcement accompanies a brand refresh that supports the cluster’s goal to promote the development and implementation of robotics and autonomous systems across the West Midlands.
The cluster, formed in May 2024, was created with the intention to boost industrial productivity and regional competitiveness while also generating skilled, well-paid roles in the area. The West Midlands RAS Cluster now includes 18 partner organisations and has appointed Cadence Industrial & Technical Communications as its official press office.
Speaking on the announcement, Professor Mike Wilson, chief automation officer at the MTC, said:
“The launch of the new online resource marks a significant milestone in making our resources, research, and initiatives more accessible to stakeholders and the wider public. We are already facilitating greater collaboration between industry, academia, and government, all with the aim of advancing the development and deployment of robotics and autonomous systems across the West Midlands.”
The UK continues to lag behind other G7 nations in terms of robotics adoption, with only 119 robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees. In response to this, the cluster has been established to improve uptake and encourage investment in technologies that are seen as essential to boosting productivity and long-term economic growth.
Forecasts suggest the global robotics technology market could reach £283 billion by 2032. This presents what many regard as a critical moment for the UK to improve its position in the sector, particularly by fostering homegrown RAS supply chains.
Neil Fullbrook, founder and chief executive of Cadence, commented:
“We are honoured to work with the West Midlands RAS Cluster to amplify the incredible work being carried out in robotics and automation in the region.”
The West Midlands RAS Cluster continues to work toward its stated mission to improve strategic collaboration and ensure that robotics opportunities are accessible to organisations of all sizes across the UK.
