Unique educational tech event coming to Birmingham
This May, Birmingham will host Makers Central, a unique hands-on educational event designed to ignite a passion for crafting and technology in families.
Scheduled for May 18 and 19 at NEC Birmingham, this event promises a dynamic two-day experience filled with interactive sessions covering everything from woodworking and metalworking to electronics and leathercraft.
Amidst a noticeable decline in the study of design and technology, Makers Central aims to address skill shortages in crucial areas like engineering and product design. The event will feature renowned makers, including YouTube sensation Colin Furze, providing attendees an opportunity to explore the vast potential within the design and technology fields. This engaging showcase aims to inspire the next generation of designers, engineers, and tech professionals, fostering a renewed interest in these vital sectors.
Jordana Johnson from ICHF, organisers of Makers Central said: “The show offers attendees the chance to dive into the creative process themselves, with workshops where they can craft items to take home. From forging a fire steel with Bill’s Workshop to crafting a leather wallet with Diamond Awl, there’s something for everyone to explore and enjoy.”
The annual exhibition is a premier showcase for the latest tools, materials, and techniques in the making community. This event draws makers from across the UK and beyond, providing an ideal platform for networking, idea sharing, and learning from fellow creators. It serves as a vital meeting point for enthusiasts and professionals alike, enriching the maker culture with diverse perspectives and innovations.
They added: “For those interested in learning new skills, the UK Droidbuilders will showcase their expertise in building droids from unconventional materials, offering insights into the creative process and providing inspiration for aspiring makers.”
For the creatively inclined, a scrap wood competition provides a perfect arena to showcase imagination. Participants are invited to craft a unique item from scrap wood, competing for exciting prizes.
At the exhibition, attendees can marvel at the 1:1 scale replica of Johnny 5, a product of six years of meticulous craftsmanship by Johnny 5 Replica Nottingham. The creators, self-taught in machining, have crafted all the metal parts, resulting in a fully functional homage to the beloved character.
The event also features a showcase of robotic prowess, including appearances by the Robot Wars Champion ‘Apollo’ and ‘Vulcan’ from the Chinese series ‘King of Bots’. Guests will have the thrilling chance to control a robot in combat within the ‘Robot Warrior’ arena.
A special highlight is the display from Coopers Classic Cars, which includes a stunningly accurate replica of the Batmobile, as seen in the 1989 and 1992 Batman films and the recent Flash movies. This prop is a fan’s dream come true, demonstrating exquisite attention to detail.
Additionally, fans of “Stranger Things” will appreciate the authentic replica of Jim Hopper’s police truck from the series, complete with its original Chevy 350 V8 engine, showcased at the event. This faithful recreation exemplifies the dedication to quality and authenticity in fan-favorite memorabilia.
