TechWM launches group to support women in tech
The West Midlands startup support organization, TechWM, has inaugurated a new special interest group dedicated to advancing women in the technology sector in response to a significant gender disparity in the industry.
Named the Women in Tech Special Interest Group, its mission is to increase the number of women in tech roles and leadership positions through collaboration with industry experts. These experts will assist in networking, amplifying women’s voices, and fostering gender equality.
Chaired by Tara Attfield Tomes, founder of PR agency EAST VILLAGE, the group addresses what Tomes calls the “horrifying” statistics of tech gender diversity.
According to TechWM, men dominate 77% of tech leadership positions, whereas women constitute only 24% of the tech workforce. This initiative aims to challenge and change these figures by empowering women in the tech industry.
“As a group, we want to tackle these stats head-on and shine a light on the organisations, initiatives, and individuals working hard to create change,” said Attfield.
“Our focus is on getting more women into tech and advocating for changes that enhance retention, ensuring that organisations support more women into leadership roles through robust sponsorship and mentorship.”
The Women in Tech Special Interest Group will officially launch at an event scheduled for April 18, hosted at Bruntwood SciTech’s Enterprise Wharf building. This initiative is a key part of TechWM’s strategy, previously known as Birmingham Tech, to expand the digital economy of the region inclusively and equitably.
“From networking groups and promotional platforms, to targeted support and access to finance – we’re here to coordinate, champion and celebrate our united response to the challenges facing women in tech,” said Kath Fuller, COO at TechWM.
