Wimbledon is set to do away with line judges in favour of replacing them with automated technology at next year’s championships – using AI to make out and call faults, eliminating the need for referees.
The AI technology has already been used by Wimbledon to indicate whether serves have been served or not, but this decision to adopt live electronic line calling follows extensive testing at the 2024 tournament. Building upon the existing ball-tracking and line-calling technology that has been in place for many years, Wimbledon has also launched the Catch Me Up mobile app which uses AI to summarise matches.
Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Club, stated: “We consider the technology to be sufficiently robust and the time is right to take this important step in seeking maximum accuracy in our officiating.”
While the move marks a significant departure from tradition, Bolton emphasised the need to balance innovation with the tournament’s heritage. “Line umpires have played a central role in our officiating set-up for many decades,” she said, “and we recognise their valuable contribution and thank them for their commitment and service.”
