A Shrewsbury businesswoman has praised the entrepreneurial talent of Shropshire’s young people and is urging businesses to do more to retain local skills.
Katy Jones, managing director of IT firm Network Support Solutions, said businesses needed to capitalise on the talent of young people by creating more jobs to keep them in Shropshire.
Her comments follow the 2016 Shropshire Young Enterprise Awards ceremony held at the Park Inn Hotel in Telford on May 5.
She said: “Young people from across the county were rewarded for their achievements and it was a wonderful evening.
“It was fantastic to be part of such an inspirational evening and I was extremely impressed with the professionalism of Shropshire’s young people.
“Their business ideas are original and innovative and we are very fortunate to have such a talented generation of youngsters.
“Businesses across the county should be doing what they can to retain this kind of talent in Shropshire by creating job opportunities and apprenticeships for school leavers.
“It would be such a shame to lose such passionate individuals to other areas of the country because of a shortage of suitable jobs.
Ms Jones, who has been successfully running NSS, located at Shrewsbury Business Park, for the past 18 years with business partner Paul Coulthard-Jones, sponsored the award for Best Use of ICT.
The accolade was won by Young Enterprise company Global Gourmet, which published a book of recipes called ‘Around the World in Eighty Desserts’.
Students applied their ICT skills in the production of the book, producing 155 pages of illustrated recipes. A range of software was used in the running of the company and a website was constructed to help market the book as well as various social media platforms.
The team from Holy Trinity Academy and Sixth Form in Priorslee, Telford, also scooped awards for Best Presentation and Best Presentation on the night and went onto be named Shropshire Company of the Year.
Ms Jones said: “It was a real honour to present this award to such a talented team of youngsters. They have demonstrated real hard work and dedication and I wish them every success in the West Midlands final.”
