Apricorn research finds UK firms’ security concerns are growing

A new survey by Apricorn, a Manchester-based provider of hardware encryption solutions, has revealed a significant surge in UK organisations adopting robust data encryption policies. Almost half of businesses now mandate encryption for all data, both at rest and in transit, reflecting a growing awareness of the critical role encryption plays in safeguarding sensitive information.

The survey also highlights a substantial increase in the use of hardware-encrypted devices, particularly for removable media and mobile devices. This trend is driven by the need to secure data in increasingly flexible work environments and to mitigate risks associated with data loss and theft.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Mandatory Encryption: 46% of organisations now require all data to be encrypted.
  • Hardware Encryption Adoption: 96% of organisations enforce encryption for all removable media.
  • Device Encryption: Over 94% encrypt laptops and desktops, while 28% and 29% encrypt mobile phones and USB sticks, respectively.
  • Remote Worker Security: 74% of organisations believe their remote workers are willing to comply with security measures, but lack the necessary skills or technology.
  • Data Breach Causes: Phishing, ransomware, and lack of encryption remain top concerns.

Jon Fielding, Managing Director, EMEA at Apricorn, commented: “Given the rise in remote working and the ongoing risk of cyberattacks, it’s crucial for organisations to continue expanding their use of encryption across all devices and data in transit. Protecting data at every point of its lifecycle is essential to mitigate risks, especially as threats like ransomware continue to evolve. As more businesses recognise that encryption plays an increasingly critical role in corporate cybersecurity strategies, the expanded adoption demonstrates that businesses are moving in the right direction to address emerging risks, though there is clearly still more to be done.”
