Kao Data constructing £350 million data centre in Stockport

Stockport is poised to become a hub for the UK’s digital and technology sectors as Kao Data, a leading developer and operator of advanced data centres, has commenced construction of its new £350 million facility in Reddish.

This marks a significant expansion for Kao Data, as it will be the company’s first data centre outside the south of England. The state-of-the-art facility will provide both computing capabilities and the creation of employment opportunities for Stockport residents.

With a highly skilled workforce and excellent transport links, Stockport offers businesses like Kao Data access to talent and infrastructure to support their expansion and success. Kao Data has already demonstrated its commitment to becoming an integral part of the Stockport community, working closely with Stockport College to develop courses that equip local young people with the skills needed for careers in the digital and technology sectors.

Kao Data is also launching a community fund to support local voluntary and community organisations, ensuring that its investment benefits businesses and the wider community.

Doug Loewe, CEO, Kao Data, said: “Beginning the development stage of our new data centre marks an important milestone, not only for Kao Data, but for technology in Stockport and Greater Manchester. The city region is becoming an increasingly strategic location for digital infrastructure investment, and our new facility – the largest and most sustainable in the north of England – further reinforces Greater Manchester’s position as a digital and economic powerhouse.”

Expected to be operational by 2026, the facility will help support the growth of local businesses and attract global tech companies to the town, cementing Stockport’s position as a dynamic, forward-thinking business hub.

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, concluded: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for Stockport to attract businesses like Kao Data to come and be based in the borough, with all the extra job opportunities and support for growing our local economy further that comes with them. It’s also a testament to all of the good work and investment in the borough that the Council has led on that digital and tech businesses recognise the potential of Stockport as a key location for their growth and further success.

“I’m excited to welcome Kao Data to Stockport as they join our thriving business community and contribute to our ongoing success.”
