New UKTN report reveals the West Midlands’ progress and potential in AI sector
UKTN, a source for UK technology news and insights, has published a new report examining the state of artificial intelligence (AI) in the West Midlands. The report provides an in-depth analysis of the region’s growing AI ecosystem, spotlighting local startups, investment levels, and government-backed initiatives that aim to position the West Midlands as a key player in the UK’s AI landscape.
The West Midlands, historically known for its contributions to the automotive industry, is now gaining traction in the AI sector. Currently, around 300 AI businesses operate within the wider Midlands region, representing 11% of the UK’s AI companies. Birmingham and Coventry stand out, ranking second and seventh, respectively, on the national AI-readiness index, further highlighting the region’s preparedness to drive AI advances.
The report also notes that a majority (57%) of businesses in the region are prioritising investment in AI technology, indicating strong local commitment to AI integration. Despite these advances, the report highlights that challenges remain in fully unlocking the potential of AI in the West Midlands.
According to UKTN’s findings, the region has shown steady progress, with a growing number of AI-focused startups and robust support from local government to strengthen the sector. The report includes profiles of notable companies, an assessment of current investment trends, and an analysis of the strengths and challenges facing the West Midlands AI industry.
