Coventry’s PDSL partners with PURE EV to design solid-state battery set to attract £30M+ investment
Coventry-based Pragmatic Design Solutions Ltd (PDSL) has unveiled an ambitious joint venture with India’s premier electric 2-wheeler scooter OEM, PURE EV to collaborate on redefining the landscape of electric mobility, with a particular focus on affordability.
PURE EV aims to leverage its partnership with PDSL to develop a groundbreaking high-performance electric 2-wheeler leveraging solid-state battery technology. PDSL already has a distinguished track record in delivering cutting-edge engineering and digital technology solutions since 2010. Its clientele includes Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin, Volkswagen, Bentley, Lotus, McLaren, Rivian, VInFast, Polestar, Volta Trucks, Panasonic and LG.
By integrating PDSL’s engineering and digital technology solutions with PURE EV’s expertise in battery and electric vehicle manufacturing, the development of the flagship 2-wheeler promises an impressive range of 250 kilometres, a top speed exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. This exciting new vehicle will feature an AI-driven power-train platform offering intuitive troubleshooting and rapid onboard charging, tailored for both international and the burgeoning Indian markets.
This strategic partnership, where the design and development lab will be headquartered at PDSL’s base in Coventry University Technology Park, reflects Coventry and the broader West Midlands region’s prominence as a global automotive hub, especially in electric vehicle (EV) technology.
Dr. Steve Simplay, Director of Manufacturing Supply Chain Solutions (MSME) at PDSL, commented: “Located in the heart of West Midlands, PDSL will leverage its unmatched electrification engineering and supply chain capabilities to bolster the future growth of PURE EV, through the establishment of a newly created Joint Venture for Research & Development. PDSL is currently supporting several electric vehicle OEMs through the electrification journey and will support development of solid-state batteries. With a robust portfolio boasting over 120+ IP filings, PURE EV already operates a network of more than 150 outlets with a vision of extending the business globally through expertise from PDSL. Together, we anticipate delivering even more innovative electric mobility solutions to customers, while concurrently developing a robust agile supply chain to facilitate future growth and expansion.”
The product’s design and development is currently underway, with plans for an official launch in early 2025. Marking a significant milestone in the future of sustainable and innovative electric mobility solutions, the new solid-state battery 2-wheeler EV will showcase cutting-edge battery technology, a dynamic powertrain and advanced software functionalities. It will address the evolving global consumer demands in the electric mobility space, while attracting substantial investment ranging from £30 to £40 million.
Mr. Rohit Vadera, CEO, PURE EV, said: “Having tasted success in the electric 2-wheeler commuter segment, PURE EV is excited to be entering the premium scooter segment. At PURE EV, we have continuously strived to push the boundaries of electric mobility, leveraging our robust R&D capabilities to deliver cutting-edge solutions to our customers. By joining forces with PDSL UK, we are poised to unlock new opportunities and bring to market products that not only meet but exceed the expectations of our customers. We aim to develop a premium product in every aspect that would be accepted in India and selected countries in the international market, and a joint venture with PDSL is the right step toward achieving this goal.”
