Coventry and Warwickshire introduce new EPR system
The University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) is set to launch a new electronic patient record (EPR) system, utilising Oracle Health technology, to revolutionise patient care delivery and streamline operational processes.
Scheduled to go live on 15 June 2024, this EPR system will replace traditional paper-based notes with a modern suite of digital tools and technologies.
This development follows a delay from the initially planned roll-out in October 2023.
Professor Andy Hardy, Chief Executive at the trust, stated in a press release: “Having all patient information held in one place will greatly improve the patient experience at UHCW. It will save our staff time by freeing them up from administrative tasks and duplicating information on paper to focus on what matters the most – delivering high-quality, face-to-face patient care. It will also improve our ability to share information with other care providers and enable us to start the most appropriate treatment for our patients sooner.”
The EPR aims to enhance the patient experience by ensuring that vital information is readily accessible to healthcare professionals within the trust, thereby avoiding repetitive information collection.
Hardy further mentioned that the EPR will enhance efficiency by consolidating various systems across all departments into a single trust-wide hospital record for every patient.
“It will streamline the hundreds of different systems across all departments and services into one, so that all healthcare professionals working in the trust can quickly access up-to-date, reliable and consistent information,” he explained.
Additionally, the EPR is designed to improve patient safety through automated alerts and checks, which help in reducing the risk of human error.
The system will also facilitate a more efficient discharge process by linking key departments such as inpatient wards and pharmacy, ensuring that medications are promptly available to patients as they prepare to return home.
