The University of Warwick has been awarded £1.25 million to “revolutionise AI and financial research”
During our 2024 Innovation Week, in collaboration with Innovation SuperNetwork, we learned that The University of Warwick has been granted a £1.25 million donation to establish the FutureFinance.AI Research Group. This initiative has the potential to radically change the global approach to buying, selling, leasing, and managing property over the coming five years.
Situated within the Gillmore Centre for Financial Technology at Warwick Business School, the newly formed Research Group will gather interdisciplinary academics and experts from around the globe to redefine and innovate within the financial and property technology sectors.
Professor Andy Lockett, Dean of Warwick Business School, commented: “Philanthropy is helping to make the Fintech research at WBS an important pillar in the School’s activities. I’m grateful to the donor for their generous donation.”
Led by Professor Ram Gopal, the Group will pioneer new research domains, leveraging expertise in Artificial Intelligence and blockchain technologies, to set the stage for the forthcoming era of Proptech and Fintech.
Professor Gopal, Director of The Gillmore Centre for Financial Technology, said: “AI has enormous potential to reshape real estate, with near and long-term impacts ranging from the emergence of new markets and asset types to innovations in investment and revenue models.
“Thanks to a significant donation from a friend of the University based in India, we will attract global research talent who will provide leadership in national and international debates on the application of financial technologies, the way we spend, earn, and save daily.
“This is a field that has been transformed in recent years, and in 10 years’ time will once again be unrecognisable.”
The contribution will enhance Warwick’s status as a leading hub of financial research within the UK, attracting scholars to the area, stimulating the West Midlands’ economy, and generating employment opportunities.
The Gillmore Centre for Financial Technology was founded in 2019 following a generous £3 million donation from Clive Gillmore, the founder and Group CEO of Mondrian Investment Partners and a Warwick University alumnus.
The newly established FutureFinance.AI Research Group will concentrate on employing AI, machine learning, and data science within the burgeoning fields of fintech and proptech. It aims to collaborate with partners to develop innovative tools and facilitate their expansion.
