East Midlands Institute of Technology to lead UK’s green and digital revolution
In a groundbreaking effort to lead the UK’s green and digital revolution, the New East Midlands Institute of Technology is gearing up to shape a net zero carbon workforce, crucial for driving the nation’s post-pandemic recovery. Anticipated to commence next month, the construction of this cutting-edge tech hub is set to become the “beating heart” of the country’s transformation.
A collaborative endeavour between Derby College Group, the University of Derby, Loughborough College and Loughborough University, the New East Midlands Institute of Technology is envisioned as a research-oriented, employer-led “learning factory.”
The hub’s strategic location at the front of the Stephenson building on Derby College’s Roundhouse campus signifies its integral role in working closely with industry giants like Rolls-Royce, Toyota, Alstom, and Bloc Digital to train a skilled workforce, ready for the digital revolution.
Supported by funding from the Department of Education, the construction works are set to commence in August, subject to approvals, with a scheduled opening in September 2024. By 2027, New East Midlands Institute of Technology aims to foster a thriving college community with 2,000 learners, creating unparalleled opportunities for young individuals embarking on their professional journey and adults seeking to re-skill or upskill in their careers.
Mandie Stravino OBE, the chief executive of Derby College Group, highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts between the Further Education (FE) and Higher Education (HE) sectors, stating: “The development of the IoT will broaden opportunities for both young people entering the world of work and adults looking to re-train or upskill mid-career. The new facility at DCG will greatly aid this. It will also open up more accessible routes to higher education for students who may not have previously considered this route to expand their immediate and future career options.”
New East Midlands Institute of Technology will offer comprehensive programs encompassing engineering and manufacturing technologies, information and communication technology, science and mathematics, and construction, planning, and the built environment. Through this holistic approach, the institute is set to nurture a skilled workforce capable of driving the green and digital revolution, propelling the UK to the forefront of sustainable innovation and technological advancement.
