Quantum security specialist KETS has announced a significant boost to its development plans, securing a £1.7 million contract funded by Innovate UK. The funding, awarded through the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition, is aimed at accelerating the creation of crucial components and systems for quantum network technologies, with the overarching goal of establishing the UK as a leader in this burgeoning global market.

A spokesperson for KETS stated: “This project delivers a next generation QKD solution designed for telecommunications production environments. This system addresses additional near-term market demands not met by current offerings; namely, high levels of security, robustness, and networking flexibility – all whilst being delivered at speed and at scale.”

As the deployment of QKD technology transitions from controlled laboratory verifications to more extensive national testbeds, commercial trials, and ultimately, widespread services, network and data centre operators are increasingly seeking features in QKD products that are already commonplace in other technologies within their existing operational infrastructure. The DHSI-QKD project directly addresses this evolving need, ensuring that KETS’ next-generation solution is not only at the forefront of quantum security but also seamlessly integrable with existing telecommunications networks.

The SBRI competition, under which this funding has been awarded, plays a vital role in fostering innovation and driving the commercialisation of cutting-edge technologies within the UK. By supporting companies like KETS, Innovate UK aims to solidify the nation’s position at the forefront of the rapidly advancing field of quantum communications and security.

KETS’ success in securing this substantial contract underscores the company’s expertise and innovative approach to quantum key distribution. The development of the DHSI-QKD solution promises to be a significant step forward in making quantum-secure communication a practical and scalable reality for a wide range of applications, from safeguarding critical national infrastructure to protecting sensitive commercial data. This investment will undoubtedly empower KETS to further its mission of delivering truly unbreakable encryption for a more secure digital future.
